Mark Ronson has been the undisputed star of British dance music in 2007. His album of covers, 'Version', has become one of the year's must-have CDs, spawning a massive hit with his and Lily Allen's take on Kaiser Chiefs' 'Oh My God'. Following the album's tremendous success, Ronson has spent much of the year on tour around the world. And accompanying the producer-turned-soul superstar on the mammoth jaunt was a wide selection of equipment from Sennheiser and Neumann.
Taking the album on the road was not a simple operation. Ronson himself plays either Fender Rhodes or guitar, and he's joined every night by up to ten musicians, with drums, percussion, two keyboard set ups, two guitarists, a three-piece brass section, backing vocalists, plus a rotating roster of guest singers including fellow Sennheiser user Lily Allen, Robbie Williams, Tim Burgess of The Charlatans and Alex Greenwald of Phantom Planet.
The tour climaxed at the end of October with a performance at London's Roundhouse for the BBC Electric Proms, where Ronson was joined on stage by Ricky Wilson of Kaiser Chiefs, Kyle Falconer of The View, Charlie Waller of The Rumblestrips, Alex Greenwald, Candie Payne, Daniel Merriweather and Sean Lennon.
"It's a busy show," explains front of house engineer Matthew Kettle. "We are using Sennheiser e606s on the guitar cabinets, e901s and e902s on kick drums, e914s on the snares, e604s on toms and Neumann KM184s on hi-hats, with another pair of KM184s covering the percussion overheads.
"All vocals have been on wireless SKM935s, with a wired e935 for Mark's piano. We're also running nine monitor mixes to the band, who have all been fitted with the G2 Wireless In-ear monitor system."
Coming from a studio production background, when it came time to take his music to the stage, Ronson was always going to make high demands of the equipment going out with the band. For Kettle, it was a simple choice.
"I specified the Sennheiser and Neumann mics based on previous touring experiences with them," he continues. "I felt they were the best mics for the job. Mark is, of course, very conscious of sound quality because to his studio experience. He seems very pleased with the sounds that we have been getting on tour. I brought the mics to the first tour, and they've stayed ever since. I've been a fan of Sennheiser and Neumann for a long time. They've been key ingredients in what I do for as long as I can remember."
"So far, the feedback has all been very positive. The e935s have been popular among our legions of guest vocalists. Everyone has been very happy with them. And I've been really pleased with how great they sounded all manner of male and female voices."
