The BBC television series Long Way Down may have finished, but for those who made the incredible journey from John o'Groats to Cape Town, the adventure will never be forgotten. Starring actors and motorcycle enthusiasts Ewan McGregor and Charlie Boorman, the pair were accompanied on their ride by Swiss cameraman Claudio von Planta, who chose a pair of Sennheiser ew112 G2 radio microphones to record the audio for the entire journey.
Travelling for eighty-five days and 15,000 miles over some of the harshest terrains on the planet on motorbikes, von Planta knew that everything he brought with him not only had to be robust; it had to be lightweight too.
Without working audio there would be no TV show, and on the African savannah spares aren't easy to locate.
"The challenge was to design a camera system which fitted into the tank bag of my BMW GS1200 Adventure motorcycle," he explains. "I chose a Sony V1 camera and with some Velcro I managed to attach two evolution receivers to it. And then with a splitter cable I connected both receivers into audio channel 2, which was set on automatic level."
The results, and the subsequent popularity of the six-part TV series, spoke for themselves. "I was very pleased with the performance of the Sennheiser evolution radio microphones," continues von Planta. "They're not only small and relatively cheap but also very robust and reliable. They were exposed to extreme heat, sometimes rain, endured many falls and went through a lot of dust but never failed me. Amazing! It's also very convenient that these mics run with normal AA batteries. You can always find them anywhere in the world. Even in deepest Africa!"
