Golf Addiction, a haven for players in Brighton Marina, is a golf centre with a difference. Here everyone, scratch golfer or novice, can play Augusta, St Andrews and all the world's great courses; because Golf Addiction is an indoor golf centre providing virtual reality courses players can tackle with real clubs and real balls, while never being more than 30 seconds from the nineteenth hole.
A venue this special deserved a special audio system, which is what installation company H2 Organisation provided in the form of a pair of PUBSET-1000 systems from APart.
"The brief we were given was that they needed a multi-zone system that was capable of different music source playback around the venue," says Martin Leppard, Manager at H2 Organisation. "It needed to be capable of being a background music system with a good level of intelligibility, with the versatility to step up and be a foreground system at events where it was needed, as Golf Addiction will soon be hiring the main hall out at weekends for functions. It didn't need a nightclub system, but they wanted something that could handle private functions, events or conferences."
The solution was two PUBSET-1000 systems, each consisting of one PUBDRIVE-2000 three-channel amplifier, two SUB2200s and four MASK6 mid/high speakers, plus an extra pair of MASK6s.
"We considered a couple of different manufacturers at first," continues Leppard. "But our decision was helped greatly by the fact that Sennheiser UK had all the necessary products in stock, and could get them to us quickly. I called the sales rep, Bruno Wayte, with the enquiry and we received everything two days later." The products fitted Golf Addiction's requirements perfectly.
"There are four audio zones," explains Leppard. "The entrance, which is also a lounge area, the main bar-stroke-restaurant, two VIP bays and a conference room. We wanted to keep the image the same throughout and the APart range had all the products we wanted. The MASK6 tops could be carried throughout the rest of the venue to keep the aesthetic the same and deliver exactly what the client needed."
One PUBSET-1000 provides all the audio for the main bar area, the second, after a small modification, controls the audio for the three other zones. "We took one PUBDRIVE amplifier and removed the sub drive crossover from it to make it a three-channel full range amplifier," explains Leppard. "We only needed three channels of amplifier so why waste a separate channel by buying two dual-channel amplifiers? Upon review of the product specification for the PUBDRIVE amplifiers we noticed that the built-in crossover was externally linked so we could easily bypass it."
In addition to the versatile amplifiers, the particular specifications of the MASK6 loudspeakers came in useful too. "We were very conscious of the fact that due to the Golf Addiction building being basically a large industrial space it has a steel roof and hardwood floors," continues Leppard. "We needed the right box for the job. Otherwise we'd end up with horrible echoes all over the place. The MASK6s have a slight downshift on the top end, so you get a downward angle before you even angle the box. I'm personally very pleased with the installation. The system has exceeded my expectations. I'm very pleased with the performance of the product.
Jez Leazell, co-owner of Golf Addiction, is delighted with the results. "The system does sound good," he confirms. "And we can also use it as a PA if someone wants to speak at an event. We don't turn it up that loud but it's nice to know that we can when we need to."
