| Tullamore: Sennheiser Location with a Promising Future |
| 06.02.2002 Wedemark/Tullamore |
Electro-acoustics specialist Sennheiser electronic, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of microphones, headphones and RF transmission systems, is investing heavily in its Irish factory in Tullamore. More than EUR 2.5 million is being spent on Sennheiser Ireland’s move to a new factory, which is twice as large as the previous facility. ”This new building is the prerequisite for sustaining our strong growth of recent years”, explains Dr. Heinrich Esser, President of Manufacturing at Sennheiser electronic GmbH & Co. KG. Peter Callan, Manager of the Tullamore plant, adds: ”This investment will provide Sennheiser Ireland with the opportunity to create a ‘World Class’ manufacturing environment, in line with established Sennheiser standards, in which we will achieve the necessary levels of process optimisation and productivity to sustain our competitive advantage.”
Sennheiser Ireland has a workforce of around 200 and has been producing classic wired headphones and infra-red stethoset headphones since 1991. It has also been assembling RF headphones for several years. In the meantime, capacity at the factory is no longer sufficient to supply the growing market for headphones. ”Sennheiser’s continuous expansion, especially in international business, means that we now need to increase our manufacturing capacity”, says Esser. ”This modern and much larger production facility allows us to react flexibly to the demands of the market.”
The move is more than just a change of location for Sennheiser Ireland. The inauguration of the 4000 m2 building will also see the introduction of state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies, such as the automatic manufacturing of acoustic transducers, as well as new forms of work organisation, especially team working, a practice which has been carried out very successfully at Sennheiser’s German plants for five years now. ”In team working, the teams take on organisational tasks such as capacity planning in addition to their production activities”, Callan explains. ”Job satisfaction increases and motivation is improved. That has a positive effect on productivity and delivery reliability.”
The move to the new factory is planned for April, and production will gradually be run up over the following months until it reaches full capacity in August. The new factory will be officially opened in June.
As one of the world’s leading manufacturers of microphones, headphones and wireless transmission systems, the Sennheiser Group with its headquarters in Wedemark near Hanover, Germany, had total sales of over € 220 million in 2001. The export share is 80%. Sennheiser has a total workforce of more than 1,400 employees, of whom about 800 are employed in Germany. Sennheiser is active world-wide and, in addition to other partnerships, has its own sales subsidiaries in France, the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, China, Singapore, Canada, Mexico and the USA.
