Rane RPM88 Makes for Smooth Sailing at Plymouth´s 45 Degrees

One of Plymouth's newest nightspots, the 45 Degrees Lounge Bar, has opened its doors to reveal a custom-built audio system, all controlled by a single Rane RPM88 Digital Signal Processor.

Located in Union Street, Plymouth's main club district, 45 Degrees is a sophisticated bar and club with four different zones a front bar, rear bar, dance floor and VIP room. The responsibility of creating easily controllable audio in all four zones fell to installation company Clockwork Audio.

"Basically we needed to find a good control system for the four different zones," explains Director Dave Monk from Clockwork Audio. "We needed a high-quality, reliable DSP unit to control it all. They needed a remote control unit as well, so we put an SR4 remote panel behind the bar."

"The owners at 45 Degrees didn't know what type of equipment they wanted," adds Director Zhev Liberson. "They just told us what they wanted the audio to be able to do. We quoted them for a couple of systems and they were happy with this one. We were looking at another DSP originally but for this kind of installation it just didn't come up to scratch."

For a club without an in-house audio professional, the team at Clockwork Audio knew that simplicity of use was absolutely vital.

"That was one of the reasons we chose the RPM88," continues Liberson, "because it is so simple to use. With one control behind the bar it gives them the accessibility to set the club up and use it in any format they want. We needed a limiter system so the speakers don't get overdriven. We also wanted separate EQ for each zone and a setting where you can turn everything up all together. The RPM88 can do all of that. And it can be controlled from behind the bar."

Clockwork installed the RPM88, configured the unit with Rane's Drag Net software and after the briefest instruction to 45 Degrees' staff, left the club to enjoy its new audio.

"There's been no feedback from the guys in the bar," smiles Liberson, "which is perfect. They're not technically minded but they can still use it. For automated controls in nightclubs, if people have to be trained to use it, it shouldn't be there. The user-interface should be totally self-explanatory. The people at 45 Degrees think it's a normal thing that would be in any bar."

Rane products are distributed in the United Kingdom by Sennheiser UK.
