Sennheiser Stars at MTV European Video Music Awards
The MTV European Music Awards took place earlier this month in Liverpool with all the expected drama and headlines. One thing that didn't generate controversy was the audio, as the audience at the Liverpool Echo Arena and the millions watching around the world were treated to seamless sound, courtesy of hire company Britannia Row, aided on the big day by the team from Sennheiser UK. Performers and presenters all wore Sennheiser ew 300 IEM G2 in-ear monitors, while a selection of SKM 5200 wireless microphones with Neumann KK 105 heads were the mics of choice for all presenters with artists including Beyoncé, Take That and The Ting Tings used Sennheiser vocal microphones.
2008 marked the sixth year in a row that Sennheiser has worked alongside Britannia Row at the MTV EMAs. Sennheiser Artist Relations Manager Mark Saunders was there ensuring everything ran smoothly, while Chief Engineer Andy Lillywhite was on hand to provide swift and accurate answers for the questions that inevitably arise at an event with over sixty channels of radio mics.
Derrick Zieba, Sound Designer for Britannia Row, was delighted to have Sennheiser's support on what's traditionally one of the most hectic nights of his year.
"First and foremost, the Sennheiser equipment is extremely reliable and sounds great. But equally important is that when there's an inevitable difficult situation with so many radio frequencies we can rely on Andy Lilywhite's support to help steer us through any choppy waters."
Take That's monitor engineer, Simon Hodge, agreed.
"Although we are already very self-contained with our Sennheiser equipment on the current promotional run for Take That, it's always an added bonus to come into such an important event with a very difficult RF environment and see that the Sennheiser team are there to support the event."
Having successfully overseen the event, the Sennheiser team were proud of how smoothly the evening went.
"This year's MTV Awards show proved to be one of the most technically
difficult yet," explained a relieved Mark Saunders, "with four different
areas within the arena containing RF equipment, as well as multiple
performance locations. Added to this a total frequency plan that ran to over sixty individual frequencies and the radio team had their work cut out on the frequency planning of such a high number of channels, as well as the placement and execution of the radio system that was used."
