The Script Provide Kind Words for Sennheiser
The Script, the band from Dublin that hit number one with their self-titled debut album and toured with N*E*R*D, The Hoosiers and Newton Faulkner, became household names in Britain in 2008. And the band did it all with a range of Sennheiser microphones playing a key role in their audio arsenal – including SKM 935s and wireless e 935s for lead and backing vocals.
“I’ve been using the 935s for a long time now,” explains the band’s front of house engineer John Delf. “I first bought some when I was touring with a band called The Departure. These mics give you so much level you never need to worry that you won’t be able get the vocal over the rest of the band. They sound clear and crisp, with bite. I’d been using the wireless version with Lily Allen with great success. I’d always been happy with the results when using the 935s at her shows, so it was always going to be my first choice for The Script.”
Delf and The Script have been fans of the 935s for a while, so much so the band even commissioned a unique e 935 cunningly painted to resemble a pint of Guinness. But that doesn’t mean the engineer is averse to trying out other options.
“We took two Neumann KMS 105s out on the road with us for The Script’s UK Tour this past summer,” continues Delf. “I had covered some shows doing front of house sound for The Feeling, I was standing in for my friend Jon Sword, and they use Neumann mics. They worked really well for The Feeling too, especially the KMS 104s on the backing vocals."
The Script’s backline is an all-Sennheiser affair.
“I use an e 609 on the guitar and e 604s for all four toms,” he confirms. “Whilst working with The Feeling I was able to use the e 901 on kick, e 185s for overheads and an MD 421 II on snare. That worked exceptionally well. All these mics worked so well, I brought them into The Script set up.”
Although Delf has nothing but praise for Sennheiser products he saves some of his kindest words for the team behind the microphones.
“My relationship with Sennheiser began many years ago when I was working for a band called The Delgados,” he recalls. “That relationship has grown and developed since [Artist Relations Manager] Phil Cummings joined the team. We first worked together getting Lily Allen sorted with customised fluorescent yellow wireless mics and within days of her using them at Glastonbury they were all over the covers of the tabloids. Phil has been very helpful in supporting the acts that I work for and is always there on the end of the phone to sort out any last minute requirements. It is a mutually beneficial relationship and I consider Phil one of my friends as well as a work colleague.”
