Esplanade opts for the new Sennheiser
EM 3732 receiver
29.04.2008 Wedemark

The distinctive spiky outlines of Esplanade — Theatres on the Bay rise up over the Marina Bay, Singapore’s new downtown area. Five and a half years after its opening, Esplanade has not only become an architectural icon of Singapore, it is also one of the busiest arts centres in the world, welcoming more than eight million people who enjoy the wide range of performing arts genres the venue has to offer. Helping to enhance the audience experience at Esplanade is Sennheiser’s quality audio equipment. Since April the new
EM 3732 twin receiver, together with additional Sennheiser microphone and monitoring systems, has been providing patrons with optimum sound quality during performances.

In order to be able to use the system in all auditoriums, outdoor areas and also in the rehearsal rooms of the Esplanade, the microphone receivers and monitoring transmitters are housed in mobile wheeled racks.

“Esplanade has become an integral part of the arts scene not only in Asia but also in the world,” explains Swee Fook Ho, Managing Director of Sennheiser Asia. “We are delighted that our key customer has once again chosen Sennheiser systems and the comprehensive service that we offer.” The existing Sennheiser microphone system in Esplanade has been replaced with the latest model: the arts centre has become the first venue to use the new EM 3732 twin transmitter. Twenty-eight
EM 3732 and EM 3732 COM have been in operation in Singapore since April. The 56 channels offered by the receivers have been combined with handheld SKM 5200 transmitters and SK 5212 bodypack transmitters. In addition, a 20-channel evolution wireless
ew 500 system has also been installed together with a 16-channel evolution wireless monitoring system. All systems can be controlled and

supervised remotely by PC using the Wireless Systems Manager software. As part of the installation, the antenna sites for the receivers and monitoring transmitters were carefully selected to avoid any disturbances from shipping radio traffic in the bay. The total package also includes on-site training for the technical team at Esplanade by
Sennheiser RF expert Klaus Willemsen, who demonstrated the capabilities of the EM 3732 in multi-channel operation.

The new systems have allowed Robin Shuttleworth, Technical Manager of Sound at Esplanade, to offer his artists and production clients the latest technology: “With the eclectic range of programmes presented at Esplanade, we do our best to keep up with the latest trends in the professional audio industry, and try to maintain that standard. Sennheiser over the years has proven to be the leader in RF wireless technology; they’ve got years of research and development experience within their particular field and it comes as no surprise to find it as the preferred choice in many musical and drama productions.” Esplanade already had Sennheiser systems in operation and the new EM 3732 twin transmitter came at just the right time. “We just stuck with the best transmitters and receivers!” said a delighted Shuttleworth. “We can benefit from all the advantages of the new EM 3732 and we have also purchased some smaller bodypacks.”

The new generation of receivers

Sennheiser is setting new standards with the EM 3732 twin receiver, the single EM 3731 receiver and the
EM 3732 COM twin receiver with an additional, remote-controlled audio output. The models have a switching bandwidth of 90 MHz and offer high transmission reliability and enormous flexibility in the UHF spectrum. An intuitive user menu that utilises clear and memorable icons makes the work of the sound engineers far more straightforward; transmitters can be programmed with ease via an infrared interface. The audio signal is available at either convenient XLR3 sockets or a digital audio output according to AES3/EBU standard, making it possible to connect the EM 3732 directly to a digital mixer.

It is not just the sound engineers who benefit from the EM 3732: visitors to Esplanade also reap the rewards. In the words of Product Manager Sven Boetcher: “The sound quality of the EM 3732 is outstanding. The digital — and therefore tolerance-free — compander ensures that the sound is pleasantly transparent and the reproduction of the bass notes is extremely well balanced. Lower frequencies are reproduced with excellent depth. Audiences at the Esplanade will be able to continue to enjoy top quality sound.”
