The Best of Both Worlds: Sennheiser and Neumann Launch a Common RF Wireless Microphone - Neumann KK 105 S Microphone Head for Sennheiser SKM 5000 N Handheld Transmitter

Within the past 18 months, the Neumann KMS 105 – which has just received MIPA’s ”Vocalist Microphone of the Year” Award – has firmly established itself as a reference model for audiophile recordings. Now Sennheiser and Neumann, two market leaders in audio technology, launch a wireless microphone which unites the best of both worlds. The SKM 5000 N will use Sennheiser RF wireless transmission technology with the Neumann KK 105 S microphone head, introducing the legendary Neumann sound into the wireless world.

The design of the KK 105 S super-cardioid microphone head is based on Neumann’s successful KMS 105, 140 and 150 family of wired vocalist microphones. It does not only take its excellent tonal characteristics and specifications from this series, but also its ruggedness and efficient suppression of pop and handling noise.

The SKM 5000 N handheld transmitter is a special version of Sennheiser’s state-of-the-art SKM 5000. Specially optimized for the Neumann capsule, it ensures interference-free, high-quality transmission to an associated Sennheiser receiver. As part of Sennheiser’s top-of-the-line 5000 Series, the SKM 5000 is acknowledged by professionals worldwide as the benchmark for solid RF transmission.

Existing SKM 5000 handheld transmitters may be upgraded with the Neumann head, but to fully benefit from the acoustical properties of the KK 105 S it is recommended to use the new SKM 5000 N model.

Capsule and transmitter are available in the typical Neumann nickel color finish or in black. The KK 105 S head comes complete with a large roadworthy nylon pouch big enough to hold the complete microphone, battery packs and additional accessories.

The SKM 5000 N with Neumann head is a dream come true for countless customers who time and again demanded a wireless variant of the popular Neumann KMS 105. This new microphone model marks a synergy of the core competencies of two globally active market leaders: Neumann as the world’s leading manufacturer of condenser microphones and Sennheiser as the market leader for state-of-the-art RF wireless transmission.

MKE Platinum – An Almost Invisible Star

At the AES Convention, Sennheiser unveils a brand-new clip-on microphone: the MKE Platinum. Sennheiser’s latest microphone development will be an ideal choice for all areas of live work, especially musicals and large stage productions.

To catch a glimpse of the new clip-on mike, AES visitors will have to come really close: the MKE Platinum can truly be called a sub-miniature microphone. In addition, it features a very thin yet rugged cable with a diameter of only approx. 1 mm. The Sennheiser engineers have meticulously shaped the mike’s frequency response to the requirements of live sound engineers. The result is a silky, natural and warm sound, especially in the treble.

In order to protect the microphone against moisture during ”sweaty” performances, the MKE Platinum is fitted with the Sennheiser patented ”Umbrella diaphragm”. Here, an additional diaphragm protects the acoustically active diaphragm against moisture and makes the microphone exceptionally fail-safe.

QP 3041 – The Mobile Mini-Rack

Great news for broadcast and film professionals: Sennheiser has launched the ”Quadpack” QP 3041, a mini-rack combining four camera receivers to form a portable, 4-channel true diversity receiver system.

The rugged and compact QP 3041 accepts up to four Sennheiser EK 3041 mini camera receivers. The rack features a common power supply and a common diversity antenna pair feeding the RF signal to the receivers via an integrated active splitter. If desired, two QP 3041 units can be daisy-chained and rack-mounted using a 19” adapter.

The 3000 Series mini-rack offers the movie and ENG professional com fortable monitoring of each receiver. The receivers’ XLR output sockets can be set to microphone or line level. As accessories for the QP 3041, Sennheiser offers filter modules which are of special interest for multi-channel applications. These filters increase the receivers’ frequency selectivity and ensure solid transmission even in heavy RF traffic.

Big Entrance for a Small Transmitter: The SK 5012 Made its Broadcast Debut in Salt Lake City

Bodypack transmitters for broadcast and live applications must be extremely compact but deliver a full-sized performance. With this ideal in mind, Sennheiser has developed the SK 5012, the world’s smallest professional bodypack transmitter, which made its broadcast debut at the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Wherever reliable, stable RF transmission and unobtrusive sound pick-up are prime requirements, the SK 5012 is the bodypack transmitter of choice. In Salt Lake City, the tiny ”power pack” – together with other Sennheiser systems – ensured first class broadcasts from the Winter Olympics.

Systematic miniaturization has enabled the tiny transmitter to shrink in size to a mere 61 x 53 x 17 mm. In spite of these modest dimensions, the power pack still turns out approx. 30 mW of RF output power, regardless of the charge of the two AAA batteries. The latest addition to Sennheiser’s 5000 Series, the bodypack transmitter uses HiDyn plus™ noise reduction and delivers an exceptionally pure audio signal. Sixteen tunable frequencies can be conveniently programmed via PC interfacing. The transmitter and its controls are optimally protected against moisture and accidental operation – which is particularly important for the SK 5012’s other main use: live shows and musicals.

EM 550 – The Stage Professional

Sennheiser’s most successful RF wireless series ever has been expanded by a professional line: the evolution wireless 550 series. At the heart of this system is the new EM 550 twin receiver, which has been designed for professional sound equipment providers.

In the short time since their introduction, evolution wireless 500 series transmitters have become firm favorites with PA companies and professional musicians on tour, offering excellent audio quality and ruggedness. The only thing that was missing for ”perfect bliss” was a receiver for professional tours where many RF wireless channels were used simultaneously. Now the EM 550 twin receiver is all set to make this dream come true.

The EM 550’s tough 19” metal housing conceals two true diversity receivers, eliminating the need to fiddle about with single receivers and rack adapters. A switched-mode power supply and an active antenna splitter have been integrated as well, allowing several receivers to be cascaded without the need for additional equipment. The receiver boasts a wide range of features for the true professional, including transformer-balanced audio outputs, HDX noise reduction system, LED display, separate headphone outputs and a Soundcheck Mode for checking the RF and AF levels.

The EM 550 is available as a combo with two transmitters from the evolution wireless 500 series.

MKH 800 – Studio Condenser Microphone with a Frequency Response of up to 50 kHz

A truly lightweight and really compact microphone – with a heavyweight audio performance! Not only does the MKH 800 feature five selectable pick-up patterns, switchable pre-attenuation, roll-off filter and treble emphasis, it is also the world’s first RF condenser studio microphone developed for the high-resolution digital recording formats such as DVD Audio and Super Audio CD (SACD).

The new generation of audio formats, with DVD Audio and SACD at its forefront, goes beyond the limits of CD recordings: higher bit rates ensure an improved amplitude resolution and thus less noise and distortion, while higher sampling rates increase the range of usable frequencies and improve time resolution. Transient sign als are precisely recorded, sonic subtleties, previously ”hidden”, are now revealed to the listeners’ ears – if a suitable microphone is used which can take full advantage of the new recording techniques: the MKH 800.

By carefully combining acoustical with electrical methods, the Sennheiser engineers have succeeded in extending the MKH 800’s frequency response to an incredible 50,000 Hz – without impairing the mike’s excellent noise characteristics. Fine-tuned acoustics and a matched mechanical design ensure a superior transient response. Thanks to the double capsule, the sound engineer has a choice between an omni, wide cardioid, cardioid, super-cardioid and figure-of-eight pick-up pattern. Offering high clarity and the absolute minimum coloration, the MKH 800 has a sensitivity of 40 mV/Pa ± 1 dB (free field, no load) and an A-weighted equivalent noise level of 10 dB.

As one of the world’s leading manufacturers of microphones, headphones and wireless transmission systems, the Sennheiser Group with its headquarters in Wedemark near Hanover, Germany, had total sales of over €220 million in 2001. The export share is 80%. Sennheiser has a total workforce of approx. 1,500 employees, of whom 800 are employed in Germany. Sennheiser is active worldwide and, in addition to other partnerships, has its own sales subsidiaries in France, the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, China, Singapore, Canada, Mexico and the USA.
