Infrared Simulation Today

  Page 10

The EASE-IR software was developed by SDA' Software Design Ahnert GmbH, Berlin, in cooperation with Sennheiser electronic GmbH & Co. KG, Wedemark. The main purpose of the simulation software is to provide help in the design of IR transmission systems. "With EASE-IR, we can provide our partners with a professional software tool to support their expertise in complex IR transmission projects", says Rolf Meyer, President of Marketing and Sales at Sennheiser, pointing out the strategic importance of EASE-IR.

One of the advantages of audio signal transmission by means of infrared light is that up to 32 channels can be used, for instance in convention centers, theaters or churches, where different languages have to be supported. Another major area of application is the support for the hearing impaired, who receive the stereo signal adapted to their hearing aid. In general, infrared transmission offers well-designed products with a good price/performance ratio and advantages in signal transmission security.

The following radiator and modulator models are currently included in the database:
SI 30
SZI 30
SI 29-5
SI 1015
SZI 1015
SZI 1015-T
SZI 1029
SZI 1029-10

With Sennheiser EASE-IR, the radiators' signal coverage areas can readily be simulated before the installation actually takes place. Time-consuming measurements at the location can be reduced significantly. The software makes it possible to enter the models intuitively, to visualize their three-dimensional geometry as well as textures and lighting and to calculate the signal-to-noise ratio at any spot.

"Acoustic consultants have been working acoustic design programs such as EASE for more than 10 years, but up until now, there has been no simulation software for infrared transmission technology. With EASE-IR, we hope to simplify the design and verification of IR installations. In many cases, a computer model of the project is already available, so the designer can complete the solution using EASE and EASE-IR with minimum effort", says Prof. Dr. Ing.-habil. Wolfgang Ahnert, owner of ADA (Acoustic Design Ahnert) and President of Marketing and Sales at SDA (Software Design Ahnert). Stefan Feistel, President of Research and Development at SDA, adds "For EASE-IR, a new calculation kernel had to be developed to predict IR signal distribution correctly, but we also drew great benefit from our experience in the development of acoustic software."

Outlook

Progress in the simulation of IR transmission technology will not stop with this version of Sennheiser's EASE-IR. A second version is planned for release in fall 2003. It will include a receiver database and more calculation parameters. Currently, SDA is investigating the properties of various IR noise sources, such as sunlight and lighting. Additionally, a ray-tracing calculation routine has to be developed to take reflections into account more accurately.

Furthermore, new Sennheiser products will be included and the software package will be kept up-to-date to reinforce the steady progress of the market leader in IR technology. The EASE-IR software itself will help to ensure that the transmission of speech and music by means of infrared light will continue to be a system design solution for professional applications in the future.
